“Isola, published this week by Sandhill Books, is a compact but solid debut novel where the hard work comes from David Roberts. He’s a 31-year-old coming of age story, the kind of story that can be incredibly fun, yet poignant and gut-wrenching as well.”

“The book takes place in the summer of 1974 at the end of the Cultural Revolution ( and the Cultural Revolution would be more correct, as the ‘Communist’ Party was still in practice, but then things changed.) The main character is Yafei, who happens to be my classmate at MIT from freshman through freshman year, but is not my friend… The university moved its campus to this small village in the mountains some time in the mid to late 50’s, and the stories of the Communists exiles stuck with me. I’ve told friends, ‘You know what’s worth looking back at these days, it’s this little Vietnam, because it kind of ends this great idea of communism, and things go back to a little bit of the old society, and it’s about how the human being does matter, and it’s about us.”
