Dead body found in Montclair, suspect on the run, sources say

A dead body was found in a dumpster Saturday morning, ending a manhunt for a Montclair man who had a lengthy criminal history and had just been arrested on burglary charges, authorities said.

Authorities are now investigating the death of an unidentified woman who had been in her 60s, possibly as long as 10 years, according to New Jersey State Police.

Montclair Police Chief Ramon Batista told NJ.com that the body was found in a dumpster at 140 Pleasant Valley Road around 11:50 a.m. Police had been searching for Suhaib Shamsiddin, 27, who had a lengthy criminal history including charges of burglary, robbery, contempt of court and possession of marijuana.

Shamsiddin is accused of entering a home and taking electronics, police said. He was arrested Friday and was being held on $250,000 bail. Police said they had received numerous tips for his whereabouts.

Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson told NJ.com that Shamsiddin was originally from Morocco and had lived in the area since 2015. He was living with a female relative and a 10-year-old female child in the home where he is accused of the burglary, he said.

Batista said Shamsiddin is believed to have known the woman he is accused of burglarizing.

The murder is still under investigation and police have not named the victim, NJ.com reported.

However, law enforcement sources told NJ.com that an autopsy will be performed and the name of the victim will be released once the results are made public.

NJ.com reported that local police had tracked down Shamsiddin after the homeowner reported finding his door open when he returned home from the store.

It appears Shamsiddin had been living with the relative for more than a year, authorities said.

Shamsiddin was being held at Essex County Jail in Newark, according to online inmate records.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
