Police in Vancouver are investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed in the city Wednesday evening.

Police told CNN affiliate CTV Vancouver the fatal incident occurred in the area of 29th Avenue and Beatty Street in the city’s downtown.

According to media reports, police responded to a call about “a pedestrian in the roadway.”

When officers arrived, the man was found critically injured. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the man’s cause of death.

Police have not released the victim’s name.

The killing marks the ninth pedestrian fatality in the city this year.

Last year there were at least 20 pedestrian fatalities in Vancouver.

“I suspect the change is due to the warmer weather and also more people out on the roads,” Sgt. Randy Fincham, of the Vancouver Police Department, told the affiliate.

The city is spending nearly $60 million to install pedestrian improvements on streets, according to city data.
